A Tourist's Guide to Fuel in Spain
If you're driving in Spain — whether on a road trip, renting a car, or traveling through — here's everything you need to know about refueling.
Fuel types at Spanish gas stations
Spanish gas stations (gasolineras or estaciones de servicio) typically offer these fuel types:
- Gasóleo A — Regular diesel. The most common fuel for rental cars and European vehicles. Equivalent to EN 590 diesel.
- Gasolina 95 — Regular unleaded gasoline (E10, 95 octane). Called "Sin Plomo 95" at some stations. This is standard petrol.
- Gasolina 98 — Premium unleaded (98 octane). Only needed for high-performance vehicles.
- Gasóleo B — Agricultural diesel (red-colored). Do not use this in your car — it's for agricultural machinery and is illegal for road vehicles.
- GLP (Autogas) — LPG, available at some stations. Less common.
Tip: Check your rental car's fuel cap or dashboard — it will say "Diesel" or "Gasolina". Putting the wrong fuel in can cause expensive damage.

How to refuel
Most stations in Spain are self-service. The process:
- Park at the pump and note the pump number (surtidor).
- Select the fuel type on the pump screen.
- Fill up your tank.
- Go inside to pay, telling the cashier your pump number. At 24-hour unmanned stations, you pay by card at the pump before or after fueling.
No tipping is expected at gas stations in Spain.
Payment
Visa, Mastercard, and contactless payments are accepted at virtually all stations. Some accept Amex. Unmanned 24-hour stations usually require a card (no cash). A few smaller rural stations may prefer cash.
Opening hours
Most highway stations and many in cities are open 24 hours. Smaller stations in towns may close between 22:00-07:00 and on Sundays. Check for the "24H" sign or browse our 24-hour station list.
